AN INTRODUCTION TO BRAND LICENSING

How does Intellectual Property (IP) get turned into different products, marketed, manufactured and then sold to the general public. The process looks complicated and you might not know where to start.

This seminar will give you the basics of what a licensee and retailer looks for, trends that are appearing on the horizon, if your IP fits and has 'eyeballs' - there is no definitive answer on what IP's get to appear on shelves, a lot of the time it is personal relationships built over time in the Licensing industry that gets the deals over the line. We will go through the basics on everything you need to know about turning your IP into fan merchandise.

LICENSEES & MANUFACTURERS

Now you have built up your relationship with a licensee who wants to 'License' your IP - what now?. We will hear from a prominent licensee who has numerous famous brands in their portfolios.

We will find out what they look for, how they do a deal and what are the terms of the contract. We will also go through the dreaded 'signoff' stage to get the product made and then shipped to stores around the world.

WHAT GOES IN A STYLE GUIDE & WHY ARE THEY SO IMPORTANT

IP owners have their bibles for their properties, what fonts should be used, what colour scheme is ok to use around the brand marketing.

Style guides in Licensing are much more involved that a core brand style guide.
Some style guides can take the IP to different places that the IP owner may not have thought possible. It can be a daring adventure going on a style guide creation exercise. We will hear from ??? who has been doing them for years and give you an idea of what goes in them, how a licensee or retailer uses and works with them to create a great product.

TRADING STANDARDS & COUNTERFEIT ENFORCEMENT

"Stick a pony in me pocket,... I'll fetch the suitcase from the van, Cause if you want the best ones, but you don't ask questions then brother I'm your man!."

Everyone knows Only Fools and Horses, Del Boy was the consummate knock-off market trader back in the day, if you wanted anything counterfeited just speak to Del Boy and his side-kick Rodney. Trading Standards are constantly at war with counterfeiters, how do they police the industry?, how do we help in the Licensing industry shut down knock-offs. Counterfeit branded goods contributes to global organised crime, so we will look at ways of how you can protect your IP's and how we as an industry work with law enforcement.
